Ok here it goes… I love 80’s love movies. Ok!! I said it… call me a wuss, a poor sap or whatever else you want but I am guessing if you’re any kind of romantic you love those movies too. There are many reasons to love the 80’s but the 80’s love movie is in a class all its own.

Better Off Dead

I want my two dollars!! Not sure what I am quoting?? Then you have not seen Better Off Dead. I pity your soul if you have not seen this movie so you should go to your nearest neflix queue and add it in. John Cusack is a staple actor in the 80’s and delivers a great performance in this movie.

Molly Ringwald. I can not mention the 80’s love movie and not mention Molly. Who does not like woman a who can put lipstick on with her cleavage?? The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles are all movies she has starred in.

Top Gun

I feel the need…the need for speed! I do not have to go into much detail why this movie makes the list. Not to mention this was my first “love scene” I have seen in a movie, so this movie has a special place in my heart. The vain attempts of my parents trying to shelter my innocent eyes did not work. Want to know another little known fact about me?? When I first watched this movie I decided I wanted to look the part of a fighter pilot (or maybe just look as cool as Maverick). So, I got my haircut like Maverick and my very own bomber jacket!

There you have it… my top five favorite 80’s love movies. I know you (let’s be honest, just the ladies) must be asking yourself why Dirty Dancing did not make this list? Besides the obvious, my sister would watch this movie when we were little at least ten times a day. I was subjected to cruel and unusual punishment at a young age and I have not quite recovered. Not to mention, all the man points I would be losing if a movie about dancing made this list!

First memorable moments of 2010 was going to Honduras on a mission trip. Read blog posts below.

I wrote some blog posts about my Dad this year. Writing is a way for me to vent and is a form of recovery for me.

My friend Eric Silz had a dream of starting a Adventure Group. Well his dream became a reality because we started a group and went on some great trips.

I have been learning about survival and in the process wrote some blog posts on what I learned.

I lost 30 pounds this year and I am still on track to lost the remaining of my weight!

I shot my first photo shoot this year! I actually did two and they turned out really well.

Well that sums up 2010 for me. Hope everyone has a safe and Happy New Year!

What is on the Horizon for 2011??

  • I will be going to Honduras for six weeks to learn Spanish at a immersion school!
  • Continue to develop my blog and roll out the rest of the new design. Also continue to add content to my poetry page.
  • Start school when I get back from Honduras.
  • Lose the rest of my weight.
  • Continue to save my money and get my finances in order.
  • Go on more adventure trips!

Here is a list of my favorite shows.

1. Surviving the Cut. A show about the elite forces training of the military.

2. The Colony. This show is a experiment about what would happen if a catastrophic disaster occurred. A group of people have to work together to survive.

3. Man vs. Wild. Hosted by Bear Grylls. I think every guy wants to be more like Bear Grylls. In 1998, he was the youngest British climber to climb Everest. To read the story about his climb on Everest, read his book, The Kid Who Climbed Everest: The Incredible Story of a 23-Year-Old’s Summit of Mt. Everest.

4. Dual Survival. Cody Lundin and Dave Canterbury are two survival experts who are put into a survival situation and must combine their skills to survive and reach safety.

5. Beyond Survival with Les Stroud.

6. Worst Case Scenario. Another show with Bear as the host. Bear puts himself in dangerous situations and teaches you how to get out safely. Based on the popular books, The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook.

If you are wanting to get out and do something productive this is your guide… if not then continue watching re-runs of Saved by the Bell!

1. Cut the cord. What do I mean?? Get rid of cable…there I said it. I predict that cable will be phased out in next 5 years. With sites like Hulu and major networks offering their shows online…now is a good time to cut the cord. Cable should offer their programs A la carte, where you can pick and choose which channels you want. Instead you are strong armed into being told what channels you have with each package you order.

2. Now that cable is gone, you should have all sorts of time to learn a new skill. Read this article, Top 40 Useful Sites to Learn New Skills, it will provide you with many sources on learning something new. Some of my favorite sites to learn new stuff are:

3. Volunteer.

  • Habitat for Humanity is a good place to get your hands dirty especially if you like to build things.
  • There are many opportunities to volunteer in Over the Rhine @ soup kitchens and churches.
  • Freestore Foodbank. Visit their volunteer page to get more details.

4. Go on a vacation. If your low on money do some research on what is close by. Getting out and having fun with those you love is key in rejuvenating yourself.

5. Read a book. Its a great way to unwind and relax. Check out my Summer Reading List for some ideas.

I never thought I would have a heart for mission work but I can not wait to go on my next adventure. I found one adventure that I will do in the near future. While I would love to quit my job and leave to do this, it is not feasible at the moment. So I am adding it to my bucket list and I plan on doing this when I graduate college and when I am between jobs.

It is called The World Race. You visit 11 countries in 11 months and you live out of a backpack for those months. Crazy I know… but I can’t wait to do this. Go check out the website and read all about this crazy adventure –> The World Race.

That is my day for today+homework and hopefully I will have narrowed it down so I am not carrying too much in my pack.

A couple of days ago I posted Ryan’s talk about his time in Kenya. I realize that 45 minutes is a long time and some of you may not have listened for that reason. I do recommend to take the time to do so but if you do not have the time here is a 11 minute section of the talk about Eliud. Its an amazing story and I want you to hear it.

I am going on my first mission trip out of the country to Honduras and here is a list of things I hope to accomplish on the trip.

  • Continue gaining a new perspective on life.
  • We are hiking into the jungle (about a six hour hike..give or take). I hope I finish!
  • I am leaving my safe place to go to place that is not comfortable. I am beginning to step out of my comfort zones in different areas of my life. I am learning to be less selfish with my time and enjoy life as it comes.
  • Get to know the people I will be traveling with.
  • Working on my relationship with God under different circumstances.

Well that is all for now… I plan on posting a new blog post everyday until I leave.

This is a question I have been asking myself a lot lately. Often we think of living life to the fullest means being able to buy whatever and whenever we want. What if living life to fullest means giving up some of those possessions to help sponsor a child in another country. What if it means giving up a week of vacation to go on a mission trip.

I will admit I am skeptical of some of these programs. Ryan and Allison are over in Kenya on a mission trip with Compassion International, and after reading his blog posts with his honest look at the company and the impact they are making in kids lives, I am sold on wanting to sponsor a child.

So follow Ryan @ thisisreverb for a honest and touching look at their time spent in Kenya. My friend Kelly (who by the way is an awesome photographer, check her stuff out @ daphnephotostudio.com) posted a similar post earlier about these same feelings. Read her post titled, feeling guilty for having a good life. A lot of the same emotions she is feeling is also what I am feeling at this point in my life.

I am blessed to have great friends and I love it when I can relate to my friends because of the emotions they feel about a certain topic. I know this is what life is about… living life with each other and sharing awesome experiences with each other.
